Sustainability is one the biggest things that companies should be focusing on right now and the airplane is also being reinvented into an electric airplane.
The biggest achievements so far
On June 6th 2019, the fist displays of a working electric plane were seen in California. The Ampaire 337 is a plane that can has 6 seats and was the biggest airplane to date type to have taken the skies. Its great to finally see something new and exiting happening.
The transport market has evolved a lot over the last few years. Trains and cars are already going electric and it’s a big success. Airplanes are responsible for a lot of the harmful gasses that are being emitted into the air and leave a huge carbon footprint. And with air travel also being very important, they cannot make this happen sooner. Therefore NASA is paying $6 million over the course of 3 years to make this happen. Luckily it is a race between between the corporations, so everyone is doing their absolute best to make this happen.
Rolls Royce, Airbus and Siemens are making moves in this department to make big developments. These big name empires have connected to work on the development of the electric airplane.
Why did it take so long ?
Of course it has been thought of before and there have been trials and errors. The biggest problem is that the current clean technology that is being used in cars and trains, weights the plane down. Therefore there needs to be an alternate energy source for the airplanes. The University of Illinois has a team working on this energy source and trying to make it lighter and stronger, which is proving to be a difficult task.
Another problem that came forward, is that an airplane, unlike a car and train, needs to leave the ground. A train is always connected to a rail, which also makes it fairly easy to keep it charged. Therefore the battery needs to be able to last long while and needs to stay cool. But not to worry, the problems are getting closer and closer to being solved.
Air travel is a vital way of transport, but is responsible for about 3, 5% of the gasses that are being emitted into our skies. Therefore the problem needs to be solved, but it will still take a few years before this realizes.
